Fleet Manager

Fleet managers of medium and heavy duty truck fleets are vitally interested in compression ignition engines for the benefits they provide in terms of fuel efficiency, durability, and torque to move freight. Most, if not all, medium and heavy duty trucks are powered by a diesel engine. Studies of operating expenses at large fleets indicate fuel is the largest percentage of cost so the new fuel efficiency regulations have the potential to substantially lower costs. However, changes in engine hardware to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions will require changes to heavy duty engine lubricants, which keep them running at peak efficiency. In order to protect the fleet owner's substantial investment, the right engine oil for the application must be selected.

In North America, Europe, Japan, and soon Brazil, heavy highway diesel engine particulate matter emissions regulations force the use of diesel particulate filters (DPFs) to trap and oxidize carbon soot in the exhaust. Installation of DPFs allowed diesel builders to retune engines (more specifically, to adjust fuel injection events) to achieve cooler combustion which reduces the formation of harmful nitrous oxides (NOx) but at the expense of boosting output of unburned...
